Design Classes 2024

Interior Design Classes starting this Fall at Penn State Beaver!

This 16 week Interior Design course is for individuals who are interested in learning about interior design/decorating, including those who work as designers, aspire to have a career as a professional designer, or even choose to take the program to assist them in decorating their own spaces.  It is broken down into two 8-week sessions, one in the Spring and one in the Fall.

Free Informational Seminar: Information Session Registration

A free, informational seminar by the interior design instructor, Jean Swanson, will be held on Saturday September 7, 2024, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Penn State Beaver, 100 University Drive, Monaca, PA 15061. This will be a hands-on, interactive learning session about design.    For more information, please call 724-773-3700.

 

Fall 2024 – Semester 1 – 8 weeks Saturdays from 9:00 AM to Noon , September 21 to November 9, 2024.  The cost is $659.

Spring 2025 –  Semester 2 – 8 weeks Saturdays from 9:00 AM to Noon.  Dates to be determined. The cost will be $659.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

  3. Styles of cocktail tables and end tables and how to accessorize them

  5. Styles of desks, lateral files, bookcases for offices
  6. Dining room tables, buffets, china cabinets
  7. Bedroom furniture and sizes of beds

 

FLOORING

  1. Area Rugs – Function, choosing color and pattern, different styles of rugs, fiber contents, how to measure in a room
  2. Types of carpet, traffic ratings, durability and fiber content, broadloom, carpet tiles, commercial vs residential use
  3. Hard surfaces – Engineered vs ¾-inch hardwood, hardness scale, wood species, sizes of planks, hand scraped installation methods
  4. Laminates, LVT and Cork – Commercial vs residential, properties of flooring, slip resistance, ratings and ADA compliance,

 

TILE FLOORING AND TILE WALL

  1. Porcelain vs ceramic, travertine, grout sizes and colors, layout patterns
  2. Cement tiles, cement floors

 

TYPES OF LIGHTING

  1. Types of lighting – ambient, task, accent
  2. Types of fixtures and their placements – pendant, chandeliers, recessed, & ceiling fans
  3. Lamp styles and lamp shade styles

 

FABRICS

  1. Fabric glossary types of fabrics.
  2. Upholstery guidelines and yardages
  3. Commercial vs residential healthcare, restaurants, fire rated, stain resistant, best types of fabrics to use, certificate of fire rating
  4. Mixing patterns, class will mix fabric, paint colors, furniture styles, wallpaper, and use accessories to explain all
  5. Drapery styles, C. Randall book required to purchase and discuss different types of windows, drapery styles, and fabric applications
